A Pastoral Approach for the Journey of Healing and Wholeness Through Sharing : One`s Latvian Grief Story / Ruth Sonia Ziedonis. – Riga : Cels University of Latvia, 1997. – 220 p. – ISBN 9984-9105-1-2.
Grief is a natural, highly personal process, as a normal response to life-changing events, that can lead to emotional and spiritual healing and personal growth. Through the process of sharing one`s grief and loss story, healing and wholeness often occur. The writer, a pastor of the latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, submits that to understand the depth of suffering and hope within the grief stories of Latvian immigrant parishioners, one must explore the past and present history of the Latvian people, in particular the trauma of war and the process of healing from post traumatic stress disorder, as parishioners move through Elizabeth Kubler-Ross`s stages of grief. By providing a safe and stable environment for her parishioners to share their grief stirues and by giving compassion and encouragement in her many pastoral visitations with the elderly in their homes, nursing homes, and hospitals, Ruth S. Ziedonis has helped many of them to move through the five stages of grief - denial, anger, bargarning, depression, and acceptance - to healing and wholeness. The study focuses on the significance of theology and storytelling within the community, and concludes with a theological analysis of the acts of storytelling, confession, and forgiveness through God`s grace. Healing and wholeness occur not only in the Latvian immigrants situation, but in many other similar situations as well. This is not an issue that applies only to one particular people, or ethnic group. It is a universal issue. Therefore, this book should be very helpful to pastors, counselors, and lay persons in general who are interested in healing and wholeness of the soul.
