According to the socioeconomic characterization, Chile has 8.5% of poor households, but this isn't the only criteria to define poverty. Aim: To describe the relationship between the theoretical concepts of family and poverty and the experience with peopie living in that condition. Method: descriptive qualitative study, based on the Grounded Theory. Results: the family is understood as a community of affections, builds a joint project and gives meaning to the lives of people. Poverty is defined as "spiritual poverty" related to the motivations that drive people to grow, have aspirations and fight for them. Living in a family and have people that meet company needs for affection and places them in a condition of poverty. "Spiritual poverty" takes on greater value attributed to the lack ot resources because it is linked with an eminently human condition associated with the perception of integrity and consistency between the daiiy life and the transmission of values. Lack of material resources is a transient condition that can be reversed from the confidence in their own abilities.
