In recent years we have seen a significant increase in the prevalence of depression in the world and at the same time a decrease in the age at which it starts. Depressive disorders affect people of any age, economic status or cultural or educational level, and represent a significant cost to individuals, families, the health system and the community at large. Although there are many studies on the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of depression in adults, there is little in the child and adolescent population. Futhermore, the results of these studies are variable, due primarily to the difficulty in diagnosis in this stage of life, since clinical manifistations may be less specific than in adult depression. The importance of depth in the key aspects of major depression in children and adolescents is justified by the magnitude of the problem, both in the field of helth and the social, and the demand generated by the various areas involved in health system the management of this condition. – (International Journal of Developmental and Educational Psychology = INFAD Revista de Psicologia ; ano 25, № 1-vol. 2) .
