Compared to the psychology of speech perception, systematic accounts of speech production are rare. There is a noticable lack of comprehensive psychological conceptions in this area. In particular, marked research deficiences are to be found in the modification of speech production by specific features of a communication situation. In his monograph Herrmann presents a new conception of the cognitive features of speech production and their situational determinants. Although a large number of experiments are reported in the book, it is not a mere research report. The heuristic value of Herrmann's theory is illustrated by experimental studies on special research problems in the field of psychology of language, such as naming, level of speech, and directives.
