Intelligence and Learning : [proceedings of a NATO Conference on Intelligence and Learning, held July 16-20, 1979, in York, England] / ред. Morton P. Friedman, J.P. Das, Neil O`Connor. – New York : Plenum Press, 1981. – 624 p. – (NATO Conference series ; volume 14. III Human Factors) . – ISBN 0-306-40643-8.

The traditional psychometric approach to intelligence - with its emphasis on the study of abilities - contrasts sharply with emerging alternate concepts, i.e., the developmental and structural models of Piaget, biological theories, and information processing models. Discussing both traditional and alternate concepts of intelligence, this volume provides an excellent sampling of current research and thinking relating intelligence to the major psychological processes. In addition, the contributors investigate the implications of recent research in intelligence for such fields as reading, cross-cultural psychology, and cognitive psychopathology. "Intelligence and Learning" explores several important aspects of the nature of intelligence - closure factors, individual differences in memory span, and a symbiosis of cognitive psychology and psychometrics. Piaget is then reviewed with regard to training and logic, knowledge development and memory performance, logical competence in infancy, and metacognition and intelligence theory. A number of leading experts discuss cognitive psychological analyses and intelligence as related to cognitive processes. The remainder of this work details a wealth of new research approaches to reading, individual differences, mental retardation, pathology, general intellectual abilities, and information processing. Some of the specific subjects into which insights are provided include symbolic function in Down`s syndrome children; the design of a robot mind; hemispheric intelligence; the social ecology of intelligence in the British Isles, France, and Spain; and presentation mode and organizational strategies in young children`s free recall.
