    Rogoff, Barbara.
    The Cultural Nature of Human Development / Barbara Rogoff. – Oxford : Oxford University Press, 2003. – 434 p. – ISBN 978-0-19-513133-8.

Three-year-old children in Oceania take care of younger children, but in the United States, Babysitters are expected to be at least tenyears older than that. Efe infants in Africa safely use machetes, but American middleclass adults often do not trust young children with knives. What explaines these marked differences? Barbara Rogoff argues that human development must be understood as a cultural process. Individuals develop as participants in their cultural communities, engaging with others in shared endeavors and building on cultural practicies of prior generations. Understanding these cultural practices, in turn, needs a historical view of the contributions of individuals and generations in dynamic communities. Beyond demonstrating that "Culture matters", Rogoff focuses on how culture matters in human development. "The Cultural Nature of Human Development" identifies patterns in the differences and similarities among cultural communities, such as children`s oppotunities to engage in mature activities of their community or in specialized child-focused activities. The book examines classic aspects of development afresh from a cultural angle - childrearing, social relations, independence and autonomy, developmental transitions across the lifespan, gender roles, attachment, and learning and cognitive development. This pathbreaking work provides a refreshing and revolutionary view of human development as a process of participation in communities. Rogoff supports her ideas using sociocultural research and theory from cultural and developmental psychology, anthropology, education, and history. The book willstimulate both established researchers and students interested in expanding their intellectual horizons on human development worldwide. A unique and engaging piece of scholarship, combining theoretical ideas and compelling examples, this work makes culture come alive.
