Are criminals born or made? When "Crime and Personality" was first published in the 60s most writers and researchers were stressing the environmental causes of crime - broken homes, disturbed families, poverty. But Professor Eysenck's emphasis was on the importance of heredity. He examined bow it can determine personality, and developed theories of how conditioning might alter criminal behaviour. He sees punishment as an irrelevant concept; instead we should try to eliminate criminal behaviour by whatever means psychological research and experiment suggests. On publication "Crime and Personality" created a storm of controversy. The debate among psychologists is still continuing, but new research findings of the past decade have upheld Professor Eysenck's theories, and he has incorporated these developments, together with a new introduction, into this edition.
