The children depend on the family as a source of survival, and in the case of children with intellectual disabilities, the family becomes the main protection factor for the development. This research aimed to characterize the family functioning, parental stress level and the parental practice of families of chiidren with Intellectual Deficiency (ID) and Down Sindrome (DS). Method: The research had an exploratory character, descriptive and explanatory, with transverse configuration. The participants were 75 parents, 41 parents of children with ID (with no syndromic physical characteristics apparent); and 34 parents of children with DS (with intellectual disabilities and physical characteristics visible). The children were aged between 3 and 10 years. Results: it may be noted that the characteristics that underlie the profile of parenting practices, parental stress rate and family functioning differ between groups. Conclusion: The research showed that parents of children with DS use more authoritarian control strategies. Parents of children with ID showed a combination of strategies inexact and are more stressed. – (International Journal of Developmental and Educational Psychology = INFAD Revista de Psicologia ; ano 25, № 1-vol. 1) .
