Many recent advances in medical and biological research are largely due to studies being done with nonhuman primates. Until recently, these animals were acquired from very limited sources. Now, however, knowledge of these animals` various living requirements allows researchers toraise their own primates. This volume brings together information on basic health care and development guidelines for many primate species. Special emphasis is placed on factors that place neonates at high risk for survival. Normative, descriptive, comparative, theoretical, and experimental data from several scientific disciolines are provided. The book includes discussions of prenatal influences that enhance or endanger survival and that predict population risk, techniques forearly assesment of normal and risk populations, data on normal development, and experimental information on prepartum and postpartum care of adults that places neonates at risk. Experimental evidence of the impact of nursery or restricted early rearing on the social and intellectual development of these animals is included. Basic care techniques for well established species and special support techniques and apparatus for high-risk animals are outlined.
