The Crisis of Psychoanalysis : essays on Freud, Marx and Social Psychology / Erich Fromm. – Harmondsworth : Penguin Books Ltd., 1978. – 214 p.
Challenged by other therapies, its patients and practitoners declining in numbers, contеmporary psychoanalysis s undergoing a serious crisis. Erich Fromm, one of the world's leading writers on psychoanalysis, concludes in the title essay in this volume that "the creative renewal of psychoanalysis is possible only if it overcomes its positivistic conformism and becomes again a critical and challenging theory in the spirit of radical humanism". That Erich Fromm himself has been a major contributor to such a renewal is shown by these essays, written between 1939 and 1969. Unified by the "common theme of the interrelation between psychological and sociological factors", they cover such subjects as "Marx's Contribution to the Knowledge of Man" and the famous case of "Little Hans", which touches off a shrewd commentary on Freud's analysis of the Oedipus complex in a five-year-old boy.
