Before the 1950s most investigations of dreams and dreaming were concerned with the content of dreams, in particular with their function and meaning. For those who remained unconvinced by the explanations of psychoanalysis and analytical psychology, the discovery in 1953 of rapid eye novement (REM) sleep seemed to hold out the possibility of a more 'scientific' theory being formulated. This absorbing collection of papers draws together some of the most influential findings in the field. The first half of the volume includes accounts of some early dream theories, an investigation of the content of children's dreams, and an exposition of the classic theories of Freud and Jung. The second half offers a variety of papers on REM sleep, and the effects of its deprivation, and goes on to look at the question of the dream state in relation to visual perception, motivation, information processing, drugs and biochemical processes.
