Dr. Watson has designed this self-teaching text on the principles of behavior modification, based on the operant conditioning approach, for those working with and stusying to work with mentally retarded, psychotic, and other children with behavioral disorders. The manual is written in clearly defined language with the hughest degree of communication. Testing materials are used to ensure that the reader understands the essential points of the book. True-False, Fill-in, and Essay questions appear after each major topic section tofacilitate understanding of the material, and the reader is asked to take these tests as they are encounted. This book is written in terms of the reader`s life experiences, i.e. experiences that would take place in the institution, a school, or at home. The book is writtenmainly for teachers, nurses, and parents, and covers the same standard topics that characterize any academic program in behavior modification given at the university level. In particular, there is dicussion of the problems of attention, reinforcement, shaping, and stimulus control in the ward, home, and school situation. The text covers all parameters of the behavior modification method, with emphasis on the problems of securing and maintaining the child`s attention and cooperation to modify the child`s behavior in the direction of normal behavior. Although "Child Behavior Modification" was planned to be jf value to occupational therapists, nurses, psychiatric aides, social workers, day care workers, and parents involved with emotionally disterbed childrenor taking special education courses, it is also an exellent text for undergraduate courses in behavior modification, especially those leading to the two year associates certificate in mental health.
