Roots and Routes : Ethnicity and Migration in Global Perspective / ред. Shalva Weil. – Jerusalem : The Magness Press, 1999. – 248 p. – (New Vistas in Education and Society series) .
The problems of ethnicity and migration encapsulate the modern dilemma, not only for those who are on the move, but also for those who remain at home deliberating their existential identity. This volume brings together an international array of scholars to discuss some of the leading questions concerning ethnicity and migration. Roots tell us about origins, identities and the past. Routes refer to peregrinations, diasporas and future paths. Today, in the global "village", an understanding of roots and routes is vital to our sense of perspective on ourselves and others in a time frame that unites past and present with future. The volume incorporates a rich variety of case-studies from all over the world contributed by a group of international scholars from countries as far afield as Spain and India. The chapters range from discussions of Kashmiris and Sikhs in Britain, through analyses of Cambodians living in France and Moroccans, Turks and Dutch families residing in the Netherlands, to Russian Jews and Circassians in Israel. The theoretical issues covered include the production of multiple ethnic identities, the irrelevance of unitary monolithic views of nationalism and ethnicity, the relative significance of class or ethnicity, the importance of education in multiethnic societies, the political connotations of ethnicity and migration, the issues of return migration and re-emigration, and the mythology of "uniqueness" in immigration patterns. The volume demonstrates the reciprocal relationship between ethnicity and migration, which is becoming increasingly salient in a globalized world, and should be of interest both to scholars and students of the social and behavioural sciences and education.
