Talented Teenagers : the roots of success and falure / Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Kevin Rathunde, Samuel Whalen ; contributor Maria Wong. – Cambridge : Cambridge University press, 1993. – 307 p. – ISBN 0-521-41578-0.
Parents and teachers know only too well that the brain drain of talented young people starts very early. Superbly gifted young mathematicians, musicians, artists, and scientists give up on refining their talents during the perilous teenage years, and when they stop cultivating their talents, they usually lose them forever. What is responsible for this loss of human potential? Professor Csikszentmihalyi and his colleagues studied 200 high school students over four years, jbserving their ongoing experiences to see how well they developed their talents. As they describe it, "We wanted to get a better idea about what happens in the minds of talented teenagers when they are studying - what they think about, how they feel, how much they want to do what they are doing - and whether the quality of their experience predicts the level of their commitment to talent four years later, at the end of high school." The authors chose highly talented subjects so they could jbserve factors involved in the loss of talent over the years. In their investigation of the pattern of activity and time use, they found that learning to invest in difficult tasks is indispensable to the development of a skill. They also found that the students` social environment was key: Those who enjoyed emotional and material support from their families tended to develop their skills more. Unfortunately, they also found that schools are not conductive to flow experience. Because of test requirements, teachers` goals are to cover as much ground as possible, rather than to engage the interest of the students. "Talented Teenagers" is a fascinating and absorbing examination of what makes adolescent tick: what roles personality traits, family interactions, education, and the social environment play in a young person`s motivation to develop his or her talent. Vivid descriptions in the students` own words bring the material to life. Parents, teachers, psychologists, and counselors will find in these pages concrete information about the conditions that foster the cultivation of mental abilities in adolescence, for both the gifted and average student.
