Smith, Peter K.
Understanding Children`s Development / Peter K. Smith, Helen Cowie. – 2nd edition. – Oxford : Blackwell, 1996. – 488 p. – (Basic Psychology) . – ISBN 0-631-17792-2.
This second edition of "Understanding Children`s Development" provides a straightforward and authoritative overview of child development for those new to the study of psychology. Its opening section orientates the reader to the ways in which psychologists study developmental processes and surveys the biological and evolutionary background of behavioral development. Substantial new material in chapter two reviews the recent work on "mindreading" in primates, which links to similar work on theory of mind in children (discussed later in the book). "Understanding Children`s Development" goes on to consider all the major aspects of development including social, moral and cognitive development. Emphasizing the strengths and weaknesses of different kinds of psychological research, the authors give a vivid sense of developmental psychology by describing in each chapter particularly important and revealing case studies. They also include ideas for classroom discussion and examples of practical exercises students might carry out. This second edition is revised and updated to take account of new reseach, for example on new developments in attachment research, and on aggression and bullying. It includes two completely new chapters. The first, "Becoming Socially Aware", is largely devoted to recent research on emotional development in children and exciting new work in children`s "theory of mind". The second, "Learning in Social Context", covers non-Piagetian approaches to cognitive development. It discusses the work of Lev Vygotsky and Jerome Bruner in some detail, emphasizing as they do the interpersonal and social context in which learning and development take place.
